Tonopah Trip

I drove exactly 401 miles today! Bonus - I didn't see a single highway patrol car (which means my lead foot was at work today). I was out and about today for a total of 8 hours, of which less than two were spent at my Tonopah office. I had to replace the file server there, and having built it before I went, the switch was cake! The fun part was the drive... I was armed with my camera and took a lot of pictures. I'm going to put a couple of my favorites here, but I've got the whole set of pictures at Flickr, click here to go directly to my Tonopah photo set. I got some really great pictures in Goldfield and in Tonopah this time, but I took a bunch throughout the day.

The above photo was taken through a window, so it's not as clear as I'd like, cause the windows had like 50 years of dirt on them, at least! This is a view inside the lobby of the Goldfield Hotel, which stopped operations in 1946. I find Goldfield fascinating because it's mostly a ghost town, so it's a mixture of yesterday and today... and so much of the history has been preserved. Goldfield was part of the mining boom in the very beginning of the 20th century, and since the mining companies have left, I really don't know what keeps the remaining 400 or so people still there. Someone today told me it's still the County Seat for Esmeralda County, which is astonishing (but really, there's not much in the form of population anywhere in Esmeralda County). Which reminds me, I traveled through 3 NV counties today!

The Motel above is in Tonopah, NV. I was telling someone this place is where my personal Hell would be, since I'm terrified of clowns! That's just plain creepy if you ask me. There's a lot of history in Tonopah, NV - I'd like to go back and make a weekend of it, visiting the museums, do the mine tours, just take in the old West.

How was your day, Internet?

That was THE coolest field trip I've been on. Such a gorgeous drive. The pics of the cemetery and the feet shots are my faves. I laughed watching your progression on the trip too. Thanks for taking us to work with you. I had a blast.

Clown Motel is just creepy, even if you're not afraid of clowns.
