Most Embarrassing Moment of the Week

We were paying for our groceries, and there was this rather large lady behind us in one of those motorized chairs with a grocery cart attached. She was trying to talk to Madison, and instead of being her usual shy self around strangers... Maddy says to me (very loudly), "Mommy, that lady is really, really big!" Then she felt the need to repeat it, just to make sure I heard her, as I was momentarily silenced with shock.

There just wasn't enough room under the cart for me to crawl beneath.

Well she was making an honest observation! But I think any of us would feel embarrassed. Out of the mouth of babes....

I have been that really large lady -- not in the motorized thing, but still... I had a little boy tell his grandmother not to talk to the "fat lady." He was 3 years old! Maddy's statement was an honest observation, but the little boy talking to his grandma broke my heart! Where would he, at the age of three, learn to categorize people like that, and when in the name of God's green Earth did I become the fat lady. I was mortified. Unfortunately, it was not the motivation it should have been. No, the motivation came in the form of diabetes. But I am well on the road to not ever being "her" again.

I understand the embarassment, but maybe, just maybe, Madison helped the lady wake up to an unpleasant reality? She was not mean spirited or nasty in her declaration; I say she was just fine and so are you.
