It Must Be Love??

I just saw a Levi's commercial that uses the song "It Must Be Love" by Madness. It's the second time I've seen it... and both times it irritated me. Why is that? Is it because I've reached an age that songs from my youth being used in commercials means I'm getting old? Is it because this song has special meaning to me and it's being cheapened by a Levi's commercial? Or perhaps because of this Levi's marketing campaign, which describes the relationship between a man and his Levi's as love? Anyway - it's just a commercial - but I dislike it.

My cell phone has "Dust in the Wind" as my ringer and they now have a car commercial with it. Everytime the commercial comes on, I run for my cell phone...talk about annoying.

I'm actually irritated with that commercial. Not because of the message or the use of my favorite Madness song but because of how the song is edited. The bridge to the song (which is cut out) has a slightly dark ska groove that really puts an emphasis on the emotion involved. Anyhow, it and much of the song is missing just to get the chorus in. Happy to see the song out there but, just like watching Rock Star: INXS, I would like to hear the whole song.

I've heard the commercial, I started to sing along but was in another room so I had no idea what it was an ad for. I'll have to pay more attention next time it is on.

It's not age, it's association. Every time you hear that song, it becomes an ad in your brain. That's what the marketers had in mind, but it really sucks.

Teri: I know the commercial you're talking about. That would annoy me too.

Martin: I saw it again today and kept in mind your post. You're right, they butchered it to get the right parts of the song for meaning. Further irritating!

Moose: You're not missing a thing.

Lily: You'll have to tell me what you think if you do see it.

Fred: You're absolutely right.

I think they are even using NEW songs in ads. There is a Collective Soul song -- the new one about feeling good. It is their NEW song and I heard it on a Special K ad yesterday. Kinda makes me mad that I am thinking of buying this song or CD, and here it is being used in an ad already. Ugh!

But, I wuold not discount the theory of feeling older as they use songs from our youth -- it is almost as bad as hearing an Erasure song as mUzak. Ya know?

Marten: I cannot help but adore your annoyance at the nuances and technicalities.

It has always been a pet peeve of mine when artists sell out to commercials..and its getting worse as you say..every song of my youth is apparently fair game..makes me sad..I will now remember them as parts of commercials, not for moments I enjoyed..
