Chick Movie Or Not?

Film poster for Must Love Dogs) - Copyright 20...Image via Wikipedia

Today at lunch I had another one of those riveting debates with the guys. So... Internet... settle an argument for me and perhaps enlighten me a little bit.

See, I think there's a blurry line in what constitutes a "chick" movie. I mean, there are different levels of chick. For example, Beaches or P.S. I Love You - definitely chick, there's no argument there. Right? But where do you put romantic comedies? What about Must Love Dogs, or the movie that started the debate today... Fool's Gold?

I see romantic comedies as chick movies. They're more date movies - it's much less likely for men to suggest a romantic comedy to the guys when they're deciding what movie to see, but women will definitely see them together as a group. Men are gonna see the romantic comedies with the significant other, am I right? They're somewhere in the middle of the chick flick spectrum, sure... but chick nonetheless.

So tell me what you think. Do you think chick flicks are a narrow category that requires a kleenex box, and romantic comedies are in some other category - perhaps it's own category (and what would that be?)? Or do you think there are different levels of the "chick" flick?

That's a tough call. I wouldn't consider something like Fool's Gold a chick flick but it is geared more towards women. I think a chick flick as something I couldn't possibly ever convince my husband to go see.

I think there are more categories than we acknowledge. Sure there are chick flicks and rom-coms, but there are also guy movies -- you know, the stuff most women would not necessarily be the first to suggest.

But I will note that women tend to be MUCH more open minded.

I think rom-coms are their own category. Fools Gold is the perfect example. Not a guy movie, not a chick flick -- just a plain ol' rom-com.

ANd though most will not admit it, a LOT of men LOVE a good rom-com.

I personally consider the romantic comedy to be a chick flick, just with a more guy-friendly term. It's the new term for "date movie" and something that is designed to make the couple seeing said movie feel a little more connected and set the tone for the rest of the evening.

My general rule for categorizing these is if nothing blows up, nobody gets shot, killed, or wounded in any way, and porn's not involved, it's a chick flick. If a guy will say, "Hey dude, you gotta check out (insert movie title)" it's so not a chick flick. I would love to see a guy suggest "The Price of Tides" as a movie his buddy should watch. hehehehe

VP: I haven't seen Fool's Gold so I can't say for sure where I'd put it... but from what I know, it's not a guy's movie.

Amy: I actually prefer the guy movies. But that's just me. :)

Ken: True - those movies do set a tone, don't they? They definitely have a purpose. :)

Nik: Yay! I couldn't have said it better.

Lora - I think you described it perfectly. The defining question is: "Would two guys go see this movie together?" If yes, then its either NOT a chick flick or they are not "typical" guys.

Yea, good definition. If the guys are sitting around drinking beer and one says 'I saw a good movie . . .' then it's not a chick flick.

If some girls are sitting around and one says that then it is.

Romantic comedies ARE chick flicks....How can you categorize them as anything else? When wondering if it's a chick flick...ask yourself...would a guy buy or rent this movie then watch it in it's entirety all alone?

See I like the comedy part of some "romantic comedies" I just watched What Happens In Vegas.....BUT....I have a method. I watch these chick flicks while they are funny, then when you know the turn is coming...and the love thing is gonna go down....you know a 90 min movie and 60 mins is them hating each other then the last 30 is the chick is moving to Europe to study art and the guys runs for his life to catch her and he does and they live happily ever after...when that part arrives, I turn the DVD off or simply get up and go blog because once you've seen the ending to one of these chick flicks...you've seen the ending to them all. I call em cookie cutter comedies. Every single one of them are exactly the same in the last 30 mins...and only CHICKS like the endings.

What's even MORE irritating is in 99% of them it's always the guy who is wrong and the guy who has to chase the woman down....like it always happens that way?!?!

ANY "man" who watches these movies in their entirety and enjoys them, or watches them more than once.....Needs to have his man card revoked. They are ALL chick flicks. You're ok to watch the funny 60 minutes of them, but if you hit the 61st minute you should be ashamed of your manself!!!!
