Happy Valentine's Day

Madison and I just finished making her Valentines for tomorrow's "Friendship Day" celebration at school. I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around this holiday politically correct crap. But they're having a party and she's excited, and I'm good with that. I'm really not sure how a day like this could be twisted into something offensive to anyone... well okay, I'll give you this - I do understand all the "Anti-Valentine's Day" parties going on around town. If you're single on a day like tomorrow, or even in a relationship but miserable - you might just want to shove Cupid's arrow into a terribly painful orifice on his chubby diaper-wearing person. But these are little kids? Are we catering to parents in this fashion too? Maybe I'm missing something.

What does Valentine's Day mean to you? Do you have romantic dreams of grandeur on this day, or are you the type of person who feels there shouldn't be just one day a year our sweethearts are nice to us? Or is it just another day?

I'm somewhere in the middle. Flowers are beautiful, but they die. Buy me a box of candy, and I might have to hurt you. My birthday and Christmas were just in the last 2 months, and if I want something, I usually just go buy it. I do agree that there shouldn't be just one day a year to show someone you love them. But I'm a romantic fool at heart, I can't help it - I just like the idea of Valentine's Day and all the goofiness it stands for.

I wish you a very happy Valentine's Day! I hope you get smooches, whether they're from your kids, your sweetheart, or the dog!

One more reason you are a friend of my heart. I am totally on the same page as you with the meaning behind it and how I feel about the holiday. I was single on this day for SO LONG, that now that I have a sweetheart, I want it all -- shmoopiness galore; but then all the logic kicks in and it is just one more day, blah blah blah.

Bottom line is that if I am with my sweetheart, every day is and should feel like Valentine's Day.

I send you wishes for love and shmoopiness of your own :-)

No reason for just one day. The card stores are filled the night before, the flower shops packed with guys that afternoon, and candy hearts all over Target. Was Hallmark instrumental in this big push? (with cheap cards now over $4.00). Get rid of it, let every day be like that. Unfortunately it seems most guys only do it once a year, pushed by the publicity.

While I don't think this is truly a "Hallmark Holiday," and it really isn't a Christian holiday either (there is no real religious connection), I think the PC Friendship Day is an attempt to be "Age Appropriate." It's still silly, though.

Happy Friendship Day!

I never celebrated Valentine's Day and when my grandma died on that day a few years ago, it just gave me more of a reason not to celebrate. I can say I hate Valentine's Day, but I'm definately not one of those hardcore ruin it for other's kind of people. I do think it's cute how so many people get into it, especially the kids. But, it will never be something I celebrate.

First: as you know, I'm a teacher, and PC-ness is usually abundant. However, even WE didn't have to PC-i-cize Valentine's Day. We were allowed to celebrate it as is. Interesting that some people weren't.

Second: I'm on both camps regarding V-day. No, it shouldn't be the only day you tell your loved one(s) how much you love them. However....as long as I'm in a relationship, I TOTALLY love it. =-) But I'm a big sap.

I remember our school having a list for the girls and for the guys. Now the holiday in schools seems to push that everybody needs to get one from everybody. Not just boys to girls and girls to boys. (I think calling it "Friendship Day" helps make it easier to get a card from a dude if you are a dude.) Ok, let's see if this one actually posts. hahaha
