I Guess I Needed a Parka

Hey from balmy Minnesota (42 degrees). As the desert rat I am, I can honestly say there is absolutely no way I could ever settle in a place this freakin' cold. Today was windy, freezing and I saw snow flurries now and again. My skin is way too thin for this climate. I can say, however, that it's time I return again for happier times and bring Madison with me. Next summer's trip just may be to this part of the country.

Having been raised in the military, I never lived near my extended family. I was reminded today how much I miss seeing them - I have one huge family on my Dad's side! I got to spend time with cousins and second cousins I'd never met, as well as family that I have some of my best memories with. The funeral was absolutely beautiful, and watching family who'd just lost their father and husband minimized any fears I'd been feeling. I can't even imagine what they're going through, and I am so glad I made this trip to be there for them. Dad did pretty good until they did military burial... I think we all pretty much lost it when they did the 21 gun salute.

I called and talked to Madison tonight and I miss her so much! I can't wait to get home tomorrow and see my bubba. I'm also looking forward to much warmer weather! I hope the first part of your week has been fabulous. I'm looking forward to posting about much happier subjects when I return, and I have pictures I'll be sure to get up as well.

I loathe the cold. But it is good to hear that things are going well there. Maybe there is a regional treat/toy/item that you can bring home to Maddy (well other than a Paul Bunyan axe.)

Sorry I haven't commented on the last few posts. First, my condolences to you and your family. I'll keep y'all in my thoughts and prayers. Military funerals always get me. The playing of "Taps" is when I lose it. All things considered, I'm glad you were able to enjoy time with your loved ones.

I'm in the general area of where you were, I've lived here all my life, and I can't tolerate the cold. It is so frickin cold in MI today. I had to pull out my winter coat and gloves. I don't blame you one bit for hating this weather. I hope you have a safe trip back home.

If ya do make it back to MN, be sure to hit the Mall of America. Your daughter will love it. Oh and don't forgt the SPAM museum. hehehe

Those 21 gun salutes will do it every time. I am glad you went back for your fam, it sounds like they appreciate the support. A gesture like that - traveling across the country - speaks volumes.

So, did you actually have to buy a parka? I do not own a jacket. I seriously don't. I just never get cold enough down here for one.

Martin: Yeah, the axe or the giant blue bull. Heh!

Nik: Thank you so much for your thoughts! I was pretty much sobbing when they started Taps and handed the flag to my aunt. I just don't know how you handle that weather - and it's not even winter yet! The Mall of America is definitely on my to-do list, and I totally forgot about the SPAM museum, LOL!

Barbara: I didn't have to buy the parka, but I sure wanted to... But I'd never need it here!
