Top Ten This!

As you all know, one of the big things at each year's end are the gobs and gobs of Year in Review lists - top 100 this, worst 10 that. I have come to realize I have a real love-hate relationship with these lists. I'm a big fan of lists, don't get me wrong (That was my favorite part of "High Fidelity"). Every year I am glued to the "list" programming on TV, and I browse through them all online. But I am always left disappointed; I never completely agree with even a simple top ten list written by the media. Then there's always one list I vehemently disagree with, and wonder the moron who provided this list. Associated Press has a top ten albums of 2006 list here. I read it and thought, WTF? There are problems with all lists, I get that. We can't all agree, I get that too. But this list is bad. My only guess is that the writer chose ONLY those albums who didn't make the Billboard 100 (with the exception of Bob Dylan perhaps, but is he still selling a lot of records?). So I'm going to chew on some ideas for my own year-ending lists. Please feel free to post some of your own...I would definitely love to see them. They are still my addiction, whether I like it or not. :)

What? The only artist I know on that list is Bod Dylan and I don't even like him. What statistics was this moron using? Certainly not any popular record lists...

Hmm, the list idea is a good one. If you don't mind I would like to get in on that one. I think I could so a top movie, top tv shows and top news moment ones....oh and maybe top songs...

Top overexposed celebrities, and I use that term loosely. Or Top 10 great things about How I met Your Mother. Or how about this: the top ten reason top ten lists will never fully satisfy everyone. I like my first suggestion, but I look forward to what you come up with.

I entirely agree. Someone asked me once about doing a "80's Nuts Year In Review." I didn't even take a minute before I wrote back that it couldn't happen. There is too much to consider and too few qualifications. When it comes to albums, I think one writer may be focusing on "Top 10 You Should Have Been Listening To In 2006" instead of "Top 10 Of 2006." You won't see me compare Jay Z to Depeche Mode... won't happen. I'm slightly biased and knowing that going in nullifies all results. Yet, it seems every channel has their countdown and VH1 and CMT are repeat offenders there.

VP: Please, list away! I would love to see what you come up with!

Amy: You are a journalism graduate for a reason, you have great ideas.

Martin: Jay-Z and Depeche Mode are on opposite planets. LOL I think all lists are biased, probably the biggest problem for these "lists".

Last year I did recaps like The Year in Music, The Year in TV, etc. I may do something like that again. It's always fun to look back.

Lists will always be problematic. The will always be the subjective view of that writer. I guess I take a different spin on that list. The author makes a point that more and more albums are being made with that "one" single in mind. Also, while I haven't heard of most of those albums, maybe the author is right that they are worth a listen and they just aren't getting airplay.

I like Keds' suggestion, but I would expand one of the options. How about "Top 10 Great Things About Monday Night TV."

Oh good, I am looking forward to your list! I have a similar love/hate thing for them too. Love lists - just rarely agree with anyone else!

Merry Christmas to you, Karl and Madison!!!
