Friendly IT Advice

I was downloading some music from ITunes tonight, and I got a friendly reminder, something like "Thank you for purchasing music from ITunes. Are you backing up all this in the event of a PC meltdown?" Okay, that's not the real message, but you get the idea.

Are YOU backing up your data on a regular basis? It's one of the most common IT gripes I hear - regardless of the network configurations we have in place, people save a gazillion items to their desktops or miscellaneous stray folders. When the computer crashes, they're wondering where all those items are after the repair.

Mind you - there are ways to retrieve data, depending on the type of IT doom you've been a victim of. But wouldn't it just be easier if you took a few simple steps to ensure you never lose a thing? Which reminds me. I need to bring home the external hard drive from the office tomorrow.

It's been a slow weekend around our house... hope you all had just as good a weekend!

Weekend was busy here, but in a good way. Besides, we always like seeing our friends!

As someone that's worked in the Tech Support industry for the last 11 years, it is amazing how many people don't backup their data. A few simple steps on a regular basis can make like a lot simpler. Ironically, I have a friend that works for a data recovery company and they make a ton of money off people's lack of planning.

I back up on a semi-regular basis. When I see reminders, I do it more often. ;)

Thanks for the reminder. I usually, regularly (weekly or so) backup my stuff. Especially, as I have a laptop, before I take it anywhere. I don't want to be stuck without all my stuff , that would be tragic.
Have a great week.
Take care, Meow

Ok I get the message...I am one of those people who says "oh nothing will ever happen to MY computer!" but you have made a good point. I really, really, really need to back up at home (I do it at the office all the time).

Hope things are going well for you!

I actually just started putting all of my blog posts onto rewritable discs. I had the same message from iTunes pop up and it got me thinking.

I backed up all my music on my external drive but have been thinking that I need more room on that drive (I have 160GB and 250GB drives in my computer and they are pretty full) as I ran out of room backing up my computer files. I'm considering trying to image both of the drives and see if they fit on my external. If so, it might give me room to wiggle a little.
