Thomas Dolby takes me way back

I picked up a copy of Thomas Dolby's "Retrospectacle" yesterday. I have always been a fan, but for whatever reason never bought his stuff. It is an excellent collection of some of his best work. I have sentimental thoughts of his work - when I was a sophomore in high school I had this horrible crush on a senior, who happened to be a serious Thomas Dolby fan. We had French class together and became fast friends on something we had in common: love for music. At the very end of the year he let me know he was interested in me by giving me my very first mix tape, of Thomas Dolby (of course!). I lived in a new suburban area of Las Vegas back then (you could actually see some stars in the nighttime sky) - he'd come over and we would spend hours in my driveway lying on the hood of his car watching the stars and listening to music.

I somehow got a link to Thomas Dolby's blog, it makes for an interesting read. You can find it here.

I love that memory...it takes me back to HS and my lying in the bed of my bf's truck listening to Pink Floyd. Music is notorious for sending us back down memory lane.

Never been a huge Dolby fan, but I'll check it out!

Cool little story Lora. Sounds like one of the first scenes of That 70's Show. Too bad tonight is the last episode. I'm not really sad, because it hasn't been the same this year, but the show definitely had it's moments.

Ethel: Thanks!

Barbara: You're right, memories can return instantaneously with music. :) You should check Thomas Dolby out, he was really ahead of his time in the 80s.

Cyndi: (grin) His name is Jason C. I actually ran into him about 5 years ago, he was working at a local radio station and was married. I don't know if you know him? I went to Hyde Park with him too, but didn't know him then.

Jas: Just another of so many skeletons. :)

Ken: Yeah, I think I remember the episode you're talking about, when Donna and What'sHisName (why can't I remember?) are on the hood of the Vista Cruiser. It is too bad tonight is the last episode, and too bad Topher Grace isn't coming back for it.

That brought back good memories. "She Blinded Me With Science" won't stop going through my head now though...

LOL-- ahh the good ol' mix tape gift, those were the best! Nothing said I love you like a mix tape. It's amazing to me how many memories are attached to certain songs. I'm not a fan of Thomas Dolby, but I'll check out his blog though, he's prolly got some pretty itneresting stuff going on.

See, I knew your liking keyboards went deep. I don't have any associations with Mr. Dolby's music like that but I love the songs "One Of Our Submarines" and "Close But No Cigar." Very versatile and underrated songwriter.

Wait... you both went to Hyde Park too?

Undercover angel: That song will definitely get stuck in your head. That one and the "I'm Walking on Sunshine" - LOL I hope that's not stuck there now.

Nik: The ol' mix tape trick ALWAYS worked on me, I am such a sucker for music.

Martin: You know me so well! Of course Duran Duran had a big part in my love for synthesizers but I honestly think New Order started the fever. Thomas Dolby fed the fever quite well, he had a sound matched by no one. If I had to give my favorite TD song, I'd say "Windpower". Oh, and about Hyde Park - if you mean my crush - yes. We lived only blocks from each other for years and had no idea. He was two years ahead of me, and when you're in the 7th grade, that's a big difference.
