Reconnections

This has been a month of reconnecting for me. I am one of a small circle of close friends vs. many acquaintances, but I am loyal to a fault - thus cherishing my oldest friendships more than I realize sometimes. It's so easy to be caught up in our busy lives - whether it's work, family or a hobby you're passionate about - it's so easy to forget the small things, like keeping in touch with those who mean so much to us. I'm just as guilty as anyone else! So, having had a month of reconnecting to old friendships, and making new connections with old friendships, I'm feeling especially lucky.

I spoke first about my first best friend, Lora, last October. You might remember, or you can catch up here. I hadn't heard from her for a very long time - at first I thought perhaps I'd offended her because our last conversations were about a lot of things going on in our lives. I was convinced I'd overstepped boundaries or gave unsolicited advice. "Subtle" has never been a word used to describe me! After some time I started to worry that something horrible had happened, and had no way to get in touch with her other than an email address. Suddenly one night I get an IM from her and almost fell on my ass in surprise! We've been emailing and sending pictures - and I have directed her here (Hi Lora, if you're reading!) . I've wanted to call her for at least two weeks now, and I haven't. There's always work to do, or a toddler to bathe and feed - so I need to pick up the damn phone and call her. It's too important. She sent me this great picture over the weekend and I want to post it, but haven't gotten her permission yet.

Someone else I hadn't spoken with in quite some time is my friend Jen. We've been friends since the 7th grade and she has always, always been a true friend through and through. Even though we migrated to different crowds in high school, we stayed friends and she was always there for me. I hope she won't mind me telling my funniest memory - the first time we got drunk. I can't even remember how old we were, 14, maybe 15? My first boyfriend, Jesse, came over with a couple of his friends while my parents were gone one night and brought beer. We played quarters, and of course we sucked at it! Long story short - my parents came home early and the guys were out the back door with the beer and we were stupid drunk. My parents were sooooo angry but I KNOW they were chuckling as Jen prayed to the porcelain Gods for awhile that night. Did I get sick too? I can't remember. I just know I was grounded for, like, ever! Anyway, we hadn't talked in awhile and we got a chance to catch up a bit via e-mail this weekend.

A few weeks ago I received this really nice e-mail from another Mom in Las Vegas who was looking to connect with other Mommies in the area. I was taken by surprise by the whole idea but not nearly as much as the email address she gave me. I was sure I recognized it - because we had a friend in common - the above mentioned Jen. I wrote back hoping I was correct, but it didn't matter - how cool to get to know other Mommies around here. I was right! It was Cyndi who has since been kind enough to stop by and leave comments! I knew Cyndi in high school, but she was part of a crowd Jen knew much better than I, and we didn't get to know each other very well then. It's very nice to reconnect all these years later and I have the chance to get to know her better now.

Ewwww... all this sappiness, and all at once! Do your teeth hurt from all the sugar? :) I know I usually keep it short and to the point - so if you're still with me, thanks.

That is sooo cool Loraloo! I'm very happy for you. Real contact is so much better than cybercontact, huh?

:D

You slept over my house once. I have a picture of you somewhere. I haven't spoken to Jen in years. She came over one Christmas about 6 or 7 years ago. She was as gorgeous as ever. She should have been a model. It has been cool to reconnect.

Jas: It is cool!

Cyndi: Yes, I remember! For some reason I really remember your Dad, I thought he was funny. It was you, I, Jen and Staci? Was that her name?

Undercover angel: Thanks - and it really does feel good.

Everyone remembers my dad. A loud new yorker that says exactly what is on his mind.

Cyndi: I was in awe of your Dad - that was my first experience with a New Yorker and his sense of humor was great. You're right about Jen, she really could have been a model. For awhile I think she actually considered it, I don't remember what changed her mind.

Lloyd: Well what else am I gonna talk about? Not like anyone is posting about their upcoming parenthood or anything (ahem). So I gotta get deep and creative!

That is so cool that you've been able to reconnect with old friends. I have tons of people that I would love to be able to hang out with/talk to, but the way I look at it, the true friends are the ones I still have in my life.

By the way, all the sappiness, Love IT!! I love to hear about other people's adventures/misadventures, hehehe

Cool. I connect every summer with my high school buddies. This year it's Myrtle Beach.

Great story. Reconnecting is such a good time.

It's great to reconnect with old friends. I recently had my 10 year college reunion, and was able to see folks that I thought I would have been friends with forever. Alas, even in these ages of e-mail and instant communication it still takes some effort to maintain relationships. Nice post, though.

I love it. B) It's great to see and reconnect with people from your past. Sometimes we let adulthood define us and it's important to be reminded of times before that.

Its not like anyone is calling up Teri and making her feel good about being a parent again either [grin]

I love catching up with old friends. I have many folks I'd like to reconnect with again. Of course, there are many that I'm glad I pulled the plug on. ;)
