I finally got the CD in the mail! I furiously ripped off the wrapper and tenderly placed it in my listening forum: the car. At first, I was a little weirded out. Where's the harsh guitar? The songs I want to sing at the top of my lungs as I race through traffic? This doesn't sound angry at all. Why does this sound like The Cure? Not that I don't love The Cure. But hey, there's a real difference between The Cure and Smashing Pumpkins. So I gave it a listen twice today, and I like it. There's a lot of synthesizer, and it's a softer, more mature Billy Corgan. I can't say I love it as a whole compilation, yet. Some of the reviews I read say you need to give it a few listens before you "get it". I can see that. So I'll keep it in the CD player and see where I end up. There is one song that stuck with me. His remake of the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody". Robert Smith of The Cure makes a guest appearance (coincidence?) and it is GREAT. Haunting. I sung it to myself all day (perhaps that's why I kept finding myself alone in any room?).

I think some of that keyboard texture you are hearing on the album is coming from his recent tenure touring and recording with New Order. I really need to start working on my Smashing Pumpkins collection.
You're right Martin... I saw that (probably my fabulous weekly 80's Nuts newsletter!) I listened to it today with your comment in mind. It DOES sound like a New Order influence. AND, I like the CD as a whole even better today. It's really growing on me.
