Are the VMA's Really About the Videos?

I watched the MTV VMA's last night. Okay, I really more browsed it - that's the beauty of DVR. I got to move right through what I considered crap. :) I am not a fan of Diddy, or P Diddy, or Puffy or whoever the hell he is. But - I have to give him props - he was a pretty good host. I had one favorite performance - The Killers - I think they seriously ROCK. The Beavis and Butthead appearances were hilarious! They were on MTV when it was still fun to watch; in between really being a music channel (it's best moment) and the reality station it has become now. I do like Kelly Clarkson - but her performance was painful. I noted she was having some technical difficulties, so we'll just blame it all on that. I realized that award shows aren't much about the awards anymore - it's more about the appearances, the mishaps, the performances, and the backstage. At least MTV still entertains quite well for their award shows.

Only one thing to add: I do like all kinds of music. I'm a little disappointed, however, that MTV has gone so hip hop/rap. I like hip hop and rap, and R&B. But there's so much more to listen to, I feel like other genres have to fight to get air time. Green Day summed it up well when, during an acceptance speech, they thanked the viewers for showing Rock still has a place on MTV.

I saw some of it. What I thought was pretty funny was when someone would be going up to the stage via the audience that the audience would try to get their faces in front of the camera. They did not really care what artist was heading to the stage they just wanted face time.

Fifty Cent and Fat Joe, need a time out & they need to get real. Fiddy lives in a freaking mansion in CT, dude that is so not gangsta. Get over yourselves.

The VMA's are also about the horrible fashion choices.

I love the killers too! I pretty much quit watching mtv when they started replacing music with reality shows...

Thanks for the review. I didn't see it; I tend to avoid all the award shows. To much production and too little substance.

I like your characterization of MTV, though, it was a pretty cool channel before all the reality shows took over.

My kids find it hard to believe I was watching The Real World in 1992. They're all teenagers now, so they think it's a hoot.

Lily: How about that no one could figure out how to get to the stage. LOL I agree, that whole rapper war crap has no place on tv. Grow up.

Sheena: Me too, but I am somehow trying to hold on to my youth!

Jas: Seems like MTV went steadily rap/hip hop once they booted Headbangers Ball. :( Thanks for the well wishes, by the way... it's hopefully just a head cold.

Fred: Funny enough the MTV award shows are the only ones I actually watch. The rest are so stuffy.

Moose: Yeah they still play videos for an hour here or an hour there... I find videos on the other four billion cable stations MTV put out there. It's sad, but apparently it's working for their target demographic (which I am probably way past!).

I got the Killers CD from Amy and I love it. I guess them being from Vegas makes me like them even more.

I don't know why but I avoid watching award shows. I report on them but watching them has never done much for me. I think it may be the presenters that turn my stomach when they can't read the teleprompter.

As a pop culture freak, I love watching the awards shows. A sickness I suppose. But I don't watch this one. It is too hard to find the actual videos to watch, and I find no creative value to watching half naked women dancing around a rapper. I think this goes back to my standing room concert -- I am getting old.
